Il Fine Settimana #42–La Domenica

Sono diventato la persona che sono oggi all'età di dodici anni, in una gelida giornata invernale del 1975. In piedi in cucina, il ricevitore attaccato all'orecchio, sapevo che in linea non c'era solo Rahim Khan. C'era anche il mio passato di peccati non espiati. Dopo la telefonata andai a fare una passeggiata intorno al lago Spreckels. Il sole scintillava sull'acqua, dove dozzine di barche in miniatura navigavano sospinte da una brezza frizzante. In cielo due aquiloni rossi con lunghe code azzurre volavano sopra i mulini a vento, fianco a fianco, come occhi che osservassero dall'alto San Francisco, la mia città 'adozione. Improvvisamente sentii la voce di Hassan che mi sussurrava: Per te farei qualsiasi cosa. Hassan, il cacciatore di aquiloni.
