Alziamoci in piedi. Togliamoci di dosso tutta questa stanchezza. La stanchezza che c’è negli sguardi. Nei gesti. Nelle parole. Nel tirare avanti, tutto quello che c’è da tirare. Fanno male le spalle. I muscoli della schiena. Le gambe. Fanno male i giorni sempre uguali. Fanno male le solite facce. Le solite cose. Le solite battute. Fa male questa sceneggiatura. Fa male aspettare. Che cosa. Secretaries and paralegals passed along the rumors and refused eye contact. Everyone was on edge, wondering, “Who might be next?” The partners, the big boys, appeared shell-shocked and wanted no contact with their underlings. They might soon be ordered to slaughter them.

The gossip was brutal. Ten associates in Litigation terminated; partially true—only seven. The entire Estate division closed, partners and all; true. Eight partners in Antitrust jumping to another firm; false, for now.
